Why most travellers reach Komodo through Bali, and when Jakarta or Lombok makes more sense
Updated 3 November 2026
Most travellers fly through Bali because long-haul flights land there and it has the most onward flights to Labuan Bajo, about 1 hour 10 minutes in the air. Jakarta takes 2.5 to 3 hours; Lombok is about an hour but flies only three days a week. Checked 3 November 2026; check with the airline.
One airport, three ways to reach it
There is a single airport for the Komodo area: Komodo Airport, code LBJ, in Labuan Bajo. Nothing lands on Komodo island itself. The airport has been classed as international since April 2024, though few international flights use it, and the town and the harbour sit about 2 km away, roughly 10 minutes by car.
That short distance shapes the rest of this page: once you land at LBJ, the boat is practically next door. The real questions are how to reach LBJ and which night you spend in Labuan Bajo before the boat leaves. For Navila the usual start is a morning one: the open trip meets at Komodo Airport or your hotel between 09:00 and 09:30, and the boat leaves between 10:00 and 11:00. A private charter keeps its own times, set around your flights.
Three origins carry nearly everyone: Bali, Jakarta and Lombok. Bali is the usual answer, for plain reasons of timetable and geography.
From Bali, the route most guests take
Denpasar is where most long-haul itineraries into Indonesia land, so changing planes there adds no detour. The onward flight to Labuan Bajo takes about 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes. Garuda, Batik Air, Citilink, Indonesia AirAsia and Super Air Jet fly the route.
There are several flights a day, more between April and October, so a missed flight means a rebooking, not a lost day.
Indicative one-way fares run from about USD 50 to USD 150, lower outside the peak months. Treat the band as a rough guide (checked 3 November 2026) and confirm with the airline.
Two costs belong to the Bali leg. The first is the Bali tourist levy, 150,000 rupiah per foreign visitor as of May 2026. It is charged on entering Bali, not in Labuan Bajo, and the current rule is on lovebali.baliprov.go.id. The other cost is time, and that depends on how you buy your tickets.
One booking or two: the connection that costs a day
A PNR is the booking reference that ties flights together. When your flight into Bali and your flight to Labuan Bajo sit under one reference, the airline that sold both rebooks you if the first one runs late. When you buy two separate tickets, each airline treats the other flight as someone else's business. The second flight leaves without you and the fare is yours to lose.
Separate tickets also change the physical journey. You collect your bags in Bali, check in again and go through security a second time. Plan on 2.5 to 3 hours between the two flights, and our reservation team puts it more bluntly: a three-hour connection in Denpasar is tight, because immigration, baggage and re-check-in all take time. Choose a later onward flight, or sleep a night in Bali.
If a single ticket is not on offer, a spare night is the cheapest safeguard you can buy. It costs one hotel room and depends on nobody else's timetable.
From Jakarta
Jakarta to Labuan Bajo is a direct flight of about 2.5 to 3 hours, with five or more departures a day. One-way fares run roughly USD 80 to USD 250. A return via Bali on budget carriers can undercut the direct flight, so it is worth pricing both before you decide.
Jakarta suits a trip that begins or ends in Java, and it spares you the Bali levy. From Surabaya or Yogyakarta, connect through Jakarta or Bali.
From Lombok, by air and by sea
Wings Air opened Lombok to Labuan Bajo on 22 July 2025 with an ATR 72 turboprop, flying on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The flight takes about an hour, and indicative fares sit around USD 60 to USD 140. Baggage allowances on the ATR are tighter than on a jet, so check yours.
A sea crossing from Lombok to Flores runs in the dry season, April to October, and is best avoided from November to March. The water near Sumbawa is rough and overloading has been reported, which is why anyone booking that crossing should ask about life jackets before paying. The ASDP ferry from Sape to Labuan Bajo is often cancelled in high waves, so check the timetable with ASDP and Pelni directly.
Navila itself sails from Labuan Bajo and returns there. It does not make the one-way crossing, so a guest in Lombok joins by air.
A note by home market
For readers in China, Germany, France, Italy and Spain: no nonstop flight reaches Labuan Bajo from your countries. Two regional hubs are worth knowing. Singapore has a nonstop flight on Scoot of about 3 hours, roughly twice a week. Kuala Lumpur has an AirAsia flight on Thursdays and Saturdays, about 3 hours 40 minutes. Both are worth a look if your long-haul flight already lands in either city. Otherwise the long leg ends in Bali or Jakarta, and the short leg is the one on this page.
From Australia there is no nonstop flight either. AirAsia sells a Fly-Thru fare from Melbourne through Bali, from AUD 314 in its December 2025 announcement, with Melbourne to Bali daily since 20 March 2026. There is no direct Melbourne to Labuan Bajo flight; the connection is through Bali.
The night before, and the last day
Fly in the day before. The extra night costs a hotel room; arriving on the morning itself can cost you the boat. In November 2024 the airport closed for a time because of volcanic ash from Lewotobi Laki-laki, as Bisnis reported on 10 November 2024. One closure is not a pattern. Still, with a night in hand, a disruption becomes an inconvenience rather than a missed departure. Pickup between Labuan Bajo airport or your hotel and the harbour is included with a Navila booking.
On the last day an open trip is back at the harbour around 12:00, and the trip ends between 12:00 and 13:00. Book your flight after 15:00. If your international flight leaves Bali the same evening, add a night there too, because a Labuan Bajo to Bali flight that runs late has nothing behind it to absorb the delay.
Every flight detail on this page was checked on 3 November 2026. Schedules and fares change, so confirm them with the airline before you buy.
The host's note. Send us your flight numbers when you book, and we set the pickup around them. If a flight changes later, one short message is enough.

FAQ
Is there a direct flight from Bali to Labuan Bajo?
Yes. Denpasar to Labuan Bajo flies several times a day and takes about 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes. There are more between April and October; check the timetable with the airline. Checked 3 November 2026.
Is it cheaper to fly through Jakarta than through Bali?
Not reliably. A return via Bali on budget carriers can cost less than a direct Jakarta flight. Price both on the airline site for your dates. Fares are indicative only.
Can I fly from Lombok to Labuan Bajo?
Yes, on Wings Air with an ATR 72 aircraft, about an hour, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays since July 2025. Frequency can change and baggage limits are tighter than on a jet, so confirm with the airline.
Do I pay the Bali tourist levy if I only change planes there?
The 150,000 rupiah levy is charged on entering Bali, not for Labuan Bajo. For a connection that stays airside, check the current rule on lovebali.baliprov.go.id before you travel.
How early should I reach Labuan Bajo before the boat?
The day before. The open trip meets between 09:00 and 09:30 and the boat leaves between 10:00 and 11:00. The airport is about 2 km from the harbour, and the pickup is included. A private charter can be timed around your flight.
