The best flight to Labuan Bajo for a morning boat departure, worked back from the gangway

Most guests ask which flight to take. We would rather ask which flight leaves you nothing to do on boarding morning but have breakfast, and plan from there.

On Navila's 3D2N open trip, day one begins with a meeting point, either Komodo Airport or your Labuan Bajo hotel, between 09:00 and 09:30. The boat leaves between 10:00 and 11:00. The airport is about 2 km from the harbour, a drive of roughly 10 minutes, and the pickup between airport, hotel and harbour is part of the booking. A private charter is different: boarding and finishing times can be moved to suit your flights, so on a charter a late-morning landing is something to plan around, not a risk.

This is the day we plan for nearly every open-trip guest.

• Afternoon, any time: land at Komodo Airport. Bags come off the belt, and the pickup we arranged is waiting outside.
• Shortly after: you are at your hotel, a drive of about 10 minutes from the airport, and the bags go to the room.
• Evening: nothing is scheduled. Walk down to the water if you like, and send us your flight numbers for the way home if you have not yet.
• 09:00 to 09:30 next morning: pickup at the hotel or the airport for the meeting.
• 10:00 to 11:00: the boat leaves.

It asks very little of you, which is the point. If the flight runs two hours late, you lose part of a dinner rather than the boat. The airport has also closed before: in November 2024 volcanic ash from Lewotobi Laki-laki shut it for a time, reported by Bisnis on 10 November 2024. Closures like that are rare; a spare night is the only real protection.

Guests sometimes ask whether they can land in Labuan Bajo on the morning of the trip and go straight to the meeting. Where the flight starts in Indonesia, yes. From abroad, the sums say no.

Here are the figures we hold. A connection through Bali needs 2.5 to 3 hours between two separate tickets, because you collect your bags, check in again and clear security again. The flight to Labuan Bajo then takes about 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes. Bali and Labuan Bajo share the same time zone, so no hour is gained on the way. Even an international flight that lands in Bali before dawn brings you to Labuan Bajo at about the hour the meeting starts, or later.

From Jakarta the direct flight takes 2.5 to 3 hours, so an early departure could in theory reach the meeting. First-flight times change with each schedule, so check the day's timetable with the airline. You would reach the gangway with no margin at all, and we would not write you a plan that hangs on one flight leaving on time.

On a whole-boat charter the sums change. The boat is yours, so pickup and boarding are set around the flight you are actually on: you are met when you land, driven the short way to the harbour, and the boat leaves once you are aboard.

Bear two things in mind. A later boarding leaves fewer hours of daylight on day one, so the first stop is agreed with the captain on the day, and weather and tides decide the order of stops on any trip. And a charter timed to a landing still depends on the landing. Send the flight number when you book, and tell us at once if it changes.

The 3D2N open trip finishes with a snorkel at Kanawa and a return to the Labuan Bajo harbour at around 12:00. The trip is scheduled to end between 12:00 and 13:00. The ride to the airport is another 10 minutes, but what matters is the airline's check-in cut-off. It differs by carrier, so we have not tried to give one; ask your airline.

We suggest a flight home after 15:00 on the last day. That leaves time for lunch, and for a morning that runs a little late. For private charters the finishing time is set with you, so the flight can be set first.

There are two bookings we would avoid. The first is a same-evening international departure from Bali after a Labuan Bajo flight that day, because a delay on the short leg has nothing behind it to absorb it. The second is an onward booking on a strict fare that cannot be changed. If your plans allow, give the international departure the next day.

Message us on WhatsApp the moment you know, with the flight number. We will speak to the crew about what can be done. We cannot promise that an open-trip boat will wait, since its itinerary is set and other guests are aboard, and it is better to read that here than to hear it at the airport. It is also the plainest reason to arrive the day before.
