Four things to settle before you reach the quay
Updated 3 November 2026
A first time in Indonesia, flying through Bali to Labuan Bajo and then boarding Navila, comes down to four checks: visa, flights, money and health. Each section frames one fact table, marks what to verify before travelling, and carries the date 3 November 2026.
Visa and entry rules: verify the date before you fly
Entry rules are the part of any journey that changes without warning, so treat the table below as a starting point rather than an authority. It was last checked on 3 November 2026. Only the Indonesian immigration service can settle a question, and we ask you to read its pages in the week you fly.
Three points deserve a careful look. First, whether your nationality can take a visa on arrival or must apply online in advance. Second, how long your passport remains valid on the day you land, and whether it has the blank pages required. Third, proof of onward travel, which airlines and officers ask to see.
A change to the visa fee has been reported, but we cannot confirm when it takes effect. That is why the table shows the fee last confirmed, and why we suggest checking the current figure before you pay it.
Verify before travelling: visa category, fee, passport validity, the digital arrival form.
| Visa on Arrival (VoA) | Open to nationals of 97 listed countries, including most of Europe, the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Japan, South Korea, China, India and the Gulf states. Other nationalities apply in advance at evisa.imigrasi.go.id. |
|---|---|
| e-VoA | The same 30-day visa, applied for online before you travel at evisa.imigrasi.go.id. Once approved, you must enter within 90 days. |
| VoA / e-VoA price | IDR 500,000 per person; children pay the same. Fees can change, so check the official site before you fly. |
| Length of stay | 30 days from the day you arrive, single entry |
| Extension | Once, by 30 days (60 days in total), for IDR 500,000. Apply at an immigration office about a week before the first 30 days end. |
| Visa-free entry | 30 days, not extendable, for citizens of ASEAN countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam. |
| Passport | Valid for at least 6 months after your arrival date, with at least 2 blank pages |
| Onward ticket | Proof of a return or onward ticket is required for a VoA |
| All Indonesia arrival card | Free and compulsory. Fill it in within 72 hours before arrival at allindonesia.imigrasi.go.id or in the app; it covers immigration, customs and the health declaration. |
| Arriving in Labuan Bajo | Most visitors clear immigration in Bali, Jakarta or Surabaya and reach Labuan Bajo on a domestic flight |
| Bali tourist levy | IDR 150,000 per foreign visitor if you enter through Bali, paid at lovebali.baliprov.go.id. It is separate from the visa fee. |

Getting into Indonesia, then across to Flores
Most travellers reach Labuan Bajo in two steps: a long flight into Bali, Jakarta or Surabaya, then a short hop to Komodo International Airport. The table lists the gateways and typical flying times. Airlines and schedules shift with the season, so use it for the overall picture and confirm your flight on the airline's own site.
Leave room between the two flights, whether they are on one ticket or two. A tight connection is the commonest way to lose a first morning. If you are coming through Bali, check whether a separate tourist levy applies to foreign visitors there; it is charged on top of the visa.
The boarding morning itself, from hotel lobby to quay, belongs to the first-day guide and is not repeated here. This page deals with the country; that one deals with the day.
Verify before travelling: airline schedules, baggage allowance, any levy on arrival.
| Airport | Komodo International Airport, code LBJ |
|---|---|
| Usual connections | Bali (DPS), Jakarta (CGK) or Surabaya (SUB); Lombok and Kupang are smaller feeders |
| Flight time to Labuan Bajo | From Bali about 1 h 10 min to 1 h 20 min; from Surabaya about 1 h 30 min; from Jakarta 2 h 30 min to 3 h; from Lombok about 1 h |
| Airlines | Garuda Indonesia, Batik Air, Citilink and Indonesia AirAsia from Bali and Jakarta; Super Air Jet from Surabaya; Wings Air on the shorter island routes. Schedules change, so check before you book. |
| Airport to the harbour | 2 to 3 km, about 10 minutes by car |

Rupiah, cards and cash machines in Labuan Bajo
The currency is the Indonesian rupiah. The table gives a rate for orientation, but rates move daily, and the one that counts is your own bank's.
There are cash machines in town near the quay and in the airport arrivals hall. Inside the national park and out on the islands there are none, so draw whatever cash you want before boarding. Hotels, boat operators and the larger restaurants take cards, at times with a surcharge. At small shops, markets and taxis, expect to pay in cash or by QR code.
Your fare has its own payment channels, described on the booking page. Cash is for everything else: the crew's tips, which are never part of a fare, drinks bought ashore, and the small purchases of a morning in town. Before you leave home, ask your bank about its limit on foreign withdrawals.
Verify before travelling: your card's overseas fees and daily withdrawal limit.
| Currency | Indonesian rupiah (IDR); about IDR 16,000 to 16,500 to the US dollar and IDR 17,500 to 18,000 to the euro in mid-2026 |
|---|---|
| ATMs | BCA, Mandiri, BNI and BRI on Jl. Soekarno-Hatta near the harbour and at airport arrivals; none in the national park or on the islands. Take cash before you board. |
| ATM limits | IDR 1,250,000 to 3,000,000 per withdrawal; a local fee of about IDR 25,000 to 50,000, plus your own bank's charges |
| Cards or cash | Cards work at hotels, dive centres, boat companies and larger restaurants, often with a surcharge of 2 to 4 per cent. Small eateries, markets, taxis and small shops take cash. |
| Tipping | Appreciated, never compulsory. In restaurants 5 to 10 per cent when no service charge is added; for a boat crew, IDR 50,000 to 100,000 per guest per day is a common range. |

Heat, sun, water and simple remedies in the bag
Labuan Bajo is hot, and on the water the sun is stronger than it feels. The table collects the health points we hold; below is the short practical list for the bag you carry yourself.
- Sunblock, sunglasses and a hat with a brim.
- Your own prescription medicines, in their original packaging, since the pharmacies in town have a limited range.
- Mosquito repellent, as insect-borne illness is present in the region.
- A small blister kit, and shoes with a good grip for the trails.
We strongly advise travel insurance with cover for medical care and evacuation. No fare includes it; arranging it is up to you. For vaccinations and personal health questions, see your own doctor well before you travel; we are not able to advise on them.
Verify before travelling: vaccination advice from your doctor, and your insurer's terms for boats.
| Insurance | Travel insurance with medical cover and emergency evacuation is strongly recommended; add dive cover if you dive |
|---|---|
| Private hospital | Siloam Hospitals Labuan Bajo, Jl. Gabriel Gampur, +62 385 2440 666; it has a hyperbaric chamber |
| Public hospital | RSUD Komodo, Labuan Bajo, with an emergency unit; no hyperbaric chamber |
| Pharmacies | Available in town with a limited range; bring prescription medicines and sunscreen from home |
| Emergency numbers | 112 general; 118 or 119 medical; 110 police; 115 search and rescue |
| Health risks | Dengue, chikungunya and malaria are present, so protect yourself against mosquito bites. Rabies exists in dogs and monkeys: seek care at once after a bite. |

FAQ
Is a visa required before I travel to Indonesia and on to Labuan Bajo?
That depends on your nationality, and the rules change. Holders of some passports buy a visa on arrival or apply online beforehand; others must arrange one before travelling. Read the Indonesian immigration service's own pages in the week you fly, and check your passport's validity, its blank pages and your onward ticket against them.
What plug adapter and voltage do I need in Indonesia?
Mains electricity in Indonesia is 230 V at 50 Hz, and sockets take plug types C and F, both with two round pins. If your plugs are different, bring an adapter. Hotel rooms in Labuan Bajo have sockets; for charging devices on the boat, ask us before you travel.
What should I wear in Labuan Bajo, and what etiquette applies?
In town and village streets, and in churches and mosques, keep shoulders and knees covered; swimwear is for the boat, the pool and the beach. A light handshake or a nod makes a polite greeting, and use your right hand to give, receive and eat. On the dragon trails, follow the ranger's instructions.
