Komodo and Rinca: walking with a ranger where the dragons live

Updated 3 November 2026

Rinca and Komodo dragon treks from a phinisi depend on the route. Navila's 3D2N calls at Komodo Island, while the full day, the 2D1N and the 4D3N call at Rinca. Both walks go with a park ranger. The dragons are wild, and no sighting can be guaranteed.

Komodo or Rinca: the trail depends on the route

Two islands, one park, two walks of a different character, each begun at its own ranger station. Rinca is the second-largest island, and its trek starts at the Loh Buaya station. Komodo Island is the largest and the namesake of the animal, and its walks start at Loh Liang.

On Navila the route decides which of the two you meet. The 3D2N calls at Komodo Island on its second day, after Pink Beach. The full day, the 2D1N and the 4D3N call at Rinca. Each route is dragon country. None claims more than the other. A guest who wants Komodo Island itself should choose the 3D2N, or write to us and ask what a private variant can do.

The table prints the effort: a walk of 45 to 120 minutes, easy in difficulty. Three trail lengths are on offer. The ranger and the group pick one on the day, weighing the heat, the clock and the pace of the slowest walker, and nobody is hurried past the shade.

Dragons: what the rangers can and cannot promise

The dragons are wild. They are not kept in a pen. They do not appear on a schedule, and the park does not call them out of the scrub for visitors who have travelled a long way to see them. Sightings are common, but no ranger, guide or boat can guarantee that you will see one.

What the ranger can promise is safety and skill. The walk does not start without one. The ranger knows where the animals rest and tells the group where to stand. That instruction is not negotiable, and every guest follows it.

On some walks a dragon lies close to the path. On others the path is empty, and the walk is simply a walk through dry country. We say this now so that the day is not measured against a promise we never made. Nobody can make it.

Walk distances, then the ranger's safety talk

The talk comes first. At the station the ranger explains how close to stand, where to look and what to do if an animal moves toward the group. Listen to all of it, even if you have heard something similar before.

The ranger then chooses the trail with the group. Most voyages take the shorter walk, and a party that wants more can ask for the medium trail. The table prints the distances and times, and the real figure on the day is the ranger's.

There is little shade on the trail. Wear closed shoes, long sleeves or sunblock, and a hat. Carry water. Park entry is charged per person under national regulation; our park package gathers it with the ranger and local levies into one figure. It is settled apart from Navila's price unless your written quote includes it. A drone needs its own permit, which is not part of any price, and we arrange it on request.

Little children and older relatives on the dragon walk

The shorter trail is gentle. Children and grandparents walk it. The ground is dry and mostly flat, with a few uneven stretches. Heat is the real demand, more than distance.

Ask before booking about very young children; our written answer says what the park allows. Nothing is charged for a child of 0 to 2; at 3 the full fare starts. For an older relative who prefers not to walk, the cruise director can arrange a rest on the boat or at the station while the party goes ahead.

Each member of a party keeps to the ranger's pace. The group moves at the speed of the slowest walker, and nobody is hurried.

FAQ

Which Navila routes visit Komodo Island and which visit Rinca?

The 3D2N calls at Komodo Island, on the second day after Pink Beach. The full day, the 2D1N and the 4D3N call at Rinca. Three routes (2D1N, 3D2N, 4D3N) include Padar, Pink Beach and Manta Point; the full day offers Padar and Pink Beach only.

Will we see a Komodo dragon on the walk?

Wild animals, the dragons come and go as they please, and a ranger leads each group. Sightings are common near the stations, but nobody can guarantee one, and we do not. Some walks find several animals; others find none. The scenery and the ranger's knowledge make the walk worth taking either way.

Do the dragons attack walkers on the trail?

Dangerous animals are why every walk has a ranger in front. Guests keep to the group, stay where the ranger places them and follow every instruction. Walking without a ranger is not permitted, and no one is allowed to feed an animal.

Can small children and elderly guests join the dragon walk?

The shorter trail suits most children and older guests, since the ground is mainly flat. The park sets rules for very young children, so ask us before booking and we confirm them in writing. Heat is the main strain, so wear a hat, carry water and take the pace of the slowest walker.
